Devoke Water

A Lake District Hidden Gem

Devoke Water is a stunning lake, off the beaten track in Cumbria. It is the largest ‘tarn’ in the Lake District, and one of my favourite places to visit. It lies on Birker Fell, 1 km to the west of the road between Ulpha and Eskdale, at an altitude of 770 feet (223 m). It has a depth of 46 ft (14 m).

A circuit of Devoke Water gives fine views of the fells at the head of Wasdale, Eskdale and out to the Irish Sea. It’s a very peaceful area, and a hidden gem. In the 13th Century, the lake was known as Dudockis Terne, and also Fosse Terne. Locals call it Duvvock Water.
