These photos are from a few weeks ago, before winter started to take hold. I’d visited one of my old childhood playground haunts while out walking, and Poppy just couldn’t resist having a splash in the water. I’m sure she was born with webbed feet!
The photos were taken at the River Keekle, at Mill Hill farm. The water is generally quite shallow, but the ford crossing has caught numerous people out over the years, when stupidity has overpowered common sense. I’ve been one such victim, and survived my misjudgement with embarrassment and wet feet. I’m still reminded from time to time that I drove my Dad’s car through the water, and that it had to be towed away. Oops!
A few years ago, my sister and her husband witnessed the true power of the river as a car drove through flood water. The car was swept down stream, under a footbridge. While my sister called emergency services, my brother-in-law was running after the car trying to rescue those inside. Sheer luck prevented a disaster, when the car collided with an overhanging tree. The occupants scrambled out through an open window.
During calm, clear weather, the riverside used to be a brilliant playground, but it can also be incredibly dangerous. Thinking about it, I’m surprised I survived my childhood – but it’s all part of growing up, and I wouldn’t change a thing about my past – it all moulded me into who I am today. A barking mad lunatic 😂
