Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognisable feature of the species. The size and colouration of the mane serves as a signal to other lions about the male’s fitness, similar to the showiness of the peacock’s tail.

The mane is like a giant advertising board attached to your body telling others how good you are, as a fighter, a partner, a lover and a hunter.

The lion has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990’s.
