Gritter Garbo

Cumbria County Council recently invited members of the public to give names to their fleet of winter gritters. There were over 3,000 entries.

Naturally, when asking the public for suggestions, standardised naming went straight out of the window…

Here are the names chosen:

  • Gritter Garbo
  • Gritty McVitie
  • Ready Spreadie Go
  • Gritty Gritty Bang Bang
  • Spready Mercury
  • True Grit
  • Nicole Saltslinger
  • David Plowie
  • Usain Salt
  • Whinlatter Scatter
  • Gritany Spears

Could you do better?

My suggestion of the Itty Bitty Gritty Machine didn’t make the grade.

  1. I love these names! These must be Salt Trucks as they are called in Michigan where I’m from. A Gritter is what myself and the gang called a cigarette years ago. Smoke a grit! Gotta grit? ๐Ÿ˜†

      1. We get plenty of ice on the roads, but not the snow. Having said that, when the snow does arrive, we can have it bad for a week or so. The coastal areas tend to get off pretty lightly, but inland on higher ground the snow can accumulate.

  2. By golly they need to get those names painted on each truck! I think yours shouldโ€™ve been chosen itโ€™s better than a few of the othersโ€ฆ But overall what a great collection. Apparently the district has a good sense of humor ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
