More Contrast With Black & White

I thought I would share with you a simple technique that I use in Photoshop to give a crisper look to my photographs, using black & white.

  • I’ve also made a Photoshop Action to automate the task, and am offering it for free. You can download it here. I’ve only tested the action in CS6, and offer no warranty that it will work with your current set-up.

How to do:

  1. Duplicate your image (Ctrl+J).
  2. Image > Adjustments > Black & White.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Change the blend mode of Layer 1 to Soft Light.

Here are my two images side by side:

As you can see, the effect is subtle, but does add some oomph. You can adjust the image further by changing the blend mode, and opacity.
