Black Sail Hostel, operated by YHA, is remote and accessible only on foot, it’s a unique rural retreat that lovers of the great outdoors can normally only dream about. I’ve often walked to the hostel, but have never stayed there. It is something I’ve contemplated on numerous occasions. Maybe I’ll get around to doing it at some point.
There are no mod cons. There are no electric sockets and mobile phone coverage is non-existent. The bedrooms, shower and toilets are all accessed from outside. Towels and toiletries are not supplied. It sounds like heaven.
Located in a traffic-free valley, Black Sail it’s as tranquil as a stay in the Lakes gets. Those on walking, hiking and climbing holidays will value the superb access to nearby peaks including Great Gable, Pillar, Red Pike and Steeple.
If you would like to visit the Black Sail, and take in the stunning views, follow your compass. Walking/cycling access only via Bowness Knot in the Ennerdale Valley, 6 miles. Also via Buttermere, 6 miles, Honister, 4 miles and Wastwater, 6 miles.
