I’m on a quest to get fitter. Gulp.
I’m often out and about in the local area walking. I love it. But, I’ve never ever had the urge to run, until now. I guess events over the past year have pushed me subconsciously to do something about my fitness, and overall health.
Twelve months ago, my brother was told by an Oncology Consultant that he was suffering from the dreaded C-word. He had primary cancer in his bowel, and secondary in his liver. It was one almighty shock for my family.
While awaiting treatment, my brother took a turn for the worse, and was rushed 40 miles to hospital with a suspected perforated bowel. It was a life threatening scenario. Luckily, his bowel hadn’t perforated, but the operation to remove his cancer had begun. The cancer was removed from his bowel, and a colostomy bag was fitted.
Then the chemotherapy began. Once he was well enough, he was sent 100 miles to a specialist hospital to have two thirds of his liver removed. Then, there was more chemotherapy to mop up any wayward cells in his system.
This last week, my brother has had the results of a blood test, MRI and CT scan. He is clear. In December of this year, he will be having his colostomy reversed which means yet another operation. Its been a horrible journey.
All through the upset, my brother has been the bravest person I have ever known, fighting his illness head on. I couldn’t be any more proud of him.
My brothers illness has been a wake-up call for me.
Because I’m brand new to all of this running malarkey, I’m not setting myself any distance targets. There is only one thing that I aim to improve upon, which is time:
- The longer I run, the further I run.

I last ran, 35 years ago.
I don’t drink.
I don’t smoke.
I have asthma.
